Respect for Neighboring Tribal Nations

Tribal

NewRange Copper Nickel respects Tribal sovereignty and is committed to building relationships with Ojibwe nations, including the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa, Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, and Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, which share geography with northeast Minnesota that are grounded in trust.

When NewRange was formed in February 2023, we identified core values that continue to guide our daily work. One value is working respectfully with local Tribal nations to establish mutually beneficial relationships built on accountability and transparency.

Our Values In Action

Tribal Relations Policy

Our first ever Tribal Relations Policy is intended to help foster trust and collaboration with Ojibwe nations in northern Minnesota. The policy emphasizes tribal engagement, transparency, and training for all employees and contractors to ensure mutual respect and informed decision-making throughout project operations. Regular updates and tribal input aim to maintain relevance and strengthen partnerships.

Ongoing Education

To help facilitate effective tribal engagement, all NewRange employees, contractors and Board of Managers will undergo training designed to deepen their understanding of the history of Ojibwe nations in what is now called Minnesota. Trainings, informed by tribal perspectives and led by tribal members, have included conducting an annual seminar with the State of Minnesota’s Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives Office to understand how NewRange can combat and prevent violence against community members, facilitating a cultural training program with a local Tribal member for NewRange leadership and employees working in northeast Minnesota, held a “Mining 101” program to provide local Tribal leadership and staff with a better understanding of the industry and copper/nickel operations and invited local Tribes to meetings with Federal and State agencies.

Tribal Procurement Policy

NewRange has committed to implementing inclusive procurement policies that encourage participation by Native contractors in building and maintaining the facility so all groups can economically benefit from the project. As the project develops, it’s our intention to increase our spending with Tribal-owned businesses, including construction contractors, vehicle maintenance, material procurement and other project services.

Tribal Investment Guidelines

We seek to contribute to projects, programs or initiatives that have a meaningful impact on local Tribal communities. Funding can be granted for development, education, recreation, environmental projects, heritage or cultural programs, among other categories.
