A Bolder Vision for Safeguarding Water Quality and the Environment

– Former LTV Steel tailings basin

Mining Redefined

NewRange is committed to meeting the highest environmental standards for mining. It starts with efforts to clean up and update existing infrastructure, continues through every step of mineral development, and ends with a clear taxpayer-protective plan for closure and reclamation.

Groundbreaking Water Treatment Plan

With more water and wetland monitoring in place than all other Minnesota mines combined, we are making sure we protect precious water resources. We will implement water treatment infrastructure to address both legacy water treatment and manage water from our operation.

  • Treat our water to attain water quality levels that are 25 times lower in sulfate than drinking water.
  • More than 1,500 tons of existing sulfate will be removed from the St. Louis River system annually.
  • Water treatment will meet Minnesota’s strict wild rice standard, leading the state in performance.
  • The legacy industrial site will be reused, bringing it up to modern-day environmental and safety standards.

Leaving Land Better Than We Found It

A significant part of our work will include cleaning up and modernizing a legacy mining site, helping it meet or exceed current environmental and safety standards.

  • 30,000 tons of steel were recycled during preconstruction and demolition activities necessary to update the existing site for future operations.
  • Net negative carbon footprint will be pursued.
  • Progressive reclamation and land-use strategies to minimize impacts
  • $1 billion+ financial assurance package will guarantee proper site closure and reclamation regardless of the company’s financial standing.
Ecosystem

Responsible Water Management

  • Implement source control and mine design strategies to minimize impacts to water quality and quantity.
  • Collect, recycle and reuse the water impacted by our operation for further use prior to treatment and discharge – all with the objective of meeting or exceeding applicable federal, state and water quality standards in the watershed.
