Mineral Resources We Need for the Future of Energy

A Feasible Path to U.S. Energy Security

The U.S. produces only a small fraction of copper, nickel and cobalt. These necessary raw materials are found in nearly every electronic device, from personal computers and home appliances to engines and military aircraft. NewRange projects will deliver the metals we need to strengthen America’s energy and national security by creating a domestic supply of copper, nickel and cobalt.

Copper

  • Copper is used to create, conduct and store energy. It’s found extensively in data centers powering AI technology, energy generation, tactical armor, grid transmission, and medical devices.
  • Available to NewRange: 16.2 million tons.

Nickel

  • Nickel is a key alloy in the production of stainless steel, and is a critical component to produce high-temperature aerospace alloys and chemicals for lithium-ion batteries, like those found in cellphones and cars.
  • Available to NewRange: 4 million tons.

Cobalt

  • Cobalt is a key element of mobile phones, military aircraft, battery technology, and medical devices like heart valves, yet the U.S. supplies just one-third of 1% of the world’s cobalt, with only one U.S. cobalt mine to satisfy demand.
  • Available to NewRange: 329,000 tons.

Palladium

  • Part of what is called platinum group metals, palladium is used in water electrolyzers and in catalytic converters to reduce auto pollution.
  • Available to NewRange: 321 tons.

Platinum & Gold

  • Platinum is used in cancer treatments and, like gold, in jewelry and dental work. Strong permanent magnets are made from a platinum-cobalt alloy.
  • Available to NewRange: Over 12 tons.
